Department Description

Welcome to the AM Department at WVYC. This is a great department to start in if you want to eventually get a show on FM. In this department you will learn how to use the equipment in the AM studio, different techniques you can use while on-air, current FCC rules and regulations, and different ways to promote your show.

Requirements

1.    All of you will be responsible for coming on time and being prepared for your show. It is recommended that you show up 15-20 minutes before your show time. This give you time to set-up and get ready.

2.    If you are unable to attend your show, you must find a replacement for it. Only approved AM subs can replace your show. You must let me know at least 3-5 hours prior to your show.

3.    You are allowed to play any song or genre that you want, as long as the music is FCC approved. (No music with blatant drug references, sexual references, or curse words)

4.    You must play 4 rotation songs during each of your shows. You can fine the rotation music on the Marconi server in the music folder labeled “Current Rotation.”

5.    You must fill out the AM Log and a playlist log during each of your show.

6.    You must complete your assignments to the best of your ability and turn them in on time.

7.    Attend all practicum meetings and department meetings. The department meetings are used to address new policies or any issues within the department or the station.

8.    Keep in contact with me at least once a week. Shoot me an email or talk to me in the station to let me know how your show is going and if you need any assistance.

Assignments

1.    Create a flyer for your show. It must include your name, the name of your show, what time your show is aired, and any other information you deem relevant to your show.  Be creative.

2.    Listen to an FM and show and critique it.

3.    Listen to an AM show and critique it.

4.    Create a liner for your show with the Productions Department.

Evaluations

Every evaluation period is solely self-graded, focusing on aspects such as community service, attendance, quality, and improvement. A second evaluation will be given by me, highlighting the areas of quality, improvement, attendance, community service, and doing more than required. Any questions, regarding the grading policy, please see me.

Community Service

Each student is strongly suggested to attend two community service events a month for the department. This is not only a requirement of the AM Department, but also a General Practicum requirement for all students. Events will be posted in the station with a signup sheet. Also, community service events will be discussed in detail at the General Practicum Meeting.

Final Word

Please do not hesitate to talk to me about any problems, concerns, or comments you may have regarding the AM Department or the WVYC radio station members or staff. If you don’t feel comfortable talking to me, feel free to get in contact with our station managers or any other department head. I will be listening to all of your shows, so feel free to ask me for feedback. The AM channel is broadcasted over the York College channel, on AM 640, and on wvyc.org. So people will hear your shows! I look forward to working with all of you this semester!
