Welcome
to Education. I want everyone to know that you can do whatever is your desire
or temptation in this department so long as it does fit into certain legal
standards (deemed appropriate by the FCC) and keeps this department running
smoothly with all of its students together. I’m looking forward to this
department as being a functioning collective in which people can share ideas,
work together, and/or help one another if needed. If you choose to work on your
own that is fine as well, but I do ask that you be respectful of other people’s
work with the intent of wanting that same respect.
It
is mandatory that education runs for 7 hours a week. We have set it up so that it will run 10-11am
Monday through Friday and 11-1pm on Sundays.
You will each have to run at least one show a week. If by some chance we
have more than enough students required for this then I will talk to you about
it later to work that out. If you have to miss, please contact me by phone the
second that you know.
It is highly suggested that you find a replacement ahead of time
if you know that you will be unavailable, but since I know that emergencies do
happen, I will help out whenever possible. You will just have to make up the
hours during the rest of the week.
During the time
slot you are assigned, please play the tracks that are listed on the either the
post-it notes that is on the right side of the wooden cabinet in the News Room
or an e-mail that I may send you. These programs may come from a CD or an mp3
link in an e-mail I will send you or even a combination of both. Before you
start, please play the Education Intro, located in the education folder on the
computer. And, when you are finished, please play the Outro.
At the ½ hour and on the hour please play a PSA and ID (located in the
Announcements folder) and mark as such on the log. If
there are questions please feel free to call or e-mail
me.
Another requirement is that you will
all have to do at least 2 hours of community service a month. You may do this
with off campus events or on campus with service events that will be provided
by WVYC.
Now one way that I want you to be
creative, as was mentioned before, is by finding us more free educational
programming that we can play on air OR, if you want to and would be great, is
create your own educational program. This can be related to anything you
please: History, Mathematics, Science, Art, Music, Politics (so
long as it does not impede on the Public Affairs dept.), Theology, etc. You
have an idea, come to me about it and I can tell you how to get started.
Creating your own educational program is something can be used in later dates
when writing a resume for job applications which anyone knows looks great.
I hope you enjoy your time in with
us at the Education Dept. and WVYC.
